National Harm Reduction Coalition

United States

National Harm Reduction Coalition advances the health, dignity, and rights of people and communities disproportionately impacted by substance use and health inequities through education, organizational capacity building, implementation support, technical assistance, and research.

About

For more than 30 years, the National Harm Reduction Coalition (NHRC) has partnered with communities to reduce preventable harm, improve health, and save lives by strengthening the organizations, systems, and workforce that support people disproportionately impacted by substance use and health inequities. Working alongside community-based organizations, healthcare systems, public health agencies, governments, researchers, and people with lived and living experience, NHRC translates evidence into practice, strengthens the public health workforce, builds organizational capacity, and develops sustainable systems that improve health outcomes. Guided by principles of equity and social justice, we collaborate with communities that have historically faced systemic barriers to care, including Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color; Latine communities; LGBTQIA+ people; people experiencing homelessness; immigrants; justice-involved individuals; and others who have been underserved by traditional health systems, to co-create equitable, community-driven solutions that expand access to care, strengthen community leadership, and improve well-being. This work spans workforce education, implementation science, organizational capacity building, technical assistance, research, strategic partnerships, and systems change. We specialize in helping organizations move beyond knowing what works to successfully implementing what works, building the leadership, infrastructure, workforce, and organizational readiness needed to adopt, integrate, evaluate, and sustain evidence-informed practices. Whether strengthening harm reduction services, advancing tobacco harm reduction, expanding overdose prevention efforts, or helping communities respond to emerging public health challenges, NHRC equips partners with the knowledge, tools, and implementation support needed to achieve lasting, measurable impact. Across every initiative, NHRC ensures that people and communities most affected by inequity are not merely recipients of change, but leaders, partners, and co-creators of the solutions that shape healthier, more equitable communities.

Mission

The National Harm Reduction Coalition (NHRC) works at the intersection of public health, racial justice, and human rights to advance equitable access to healthcare and improve health outcomes for people and communities impacted by substance use. Through evidence-based public health education, overdose prevention and response, HIV and hepatitis C prevention and care, harm reduction, advocacy, and community partnerships, NHRC addresses the structural barriers that contribute to health inequities while empowering people to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
